Age spots, also known as hyperpigmentation are a common skin problem. This condition can be frustrating to deal with as age spots seem to appear out of nowhere!

Other kinds of hyperpigmentation:

  • Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, a skin discoloration following an inflammatory skin condition such as acne.
  • Melasma, commonly known as pregnancy mask.
  • Riehl's Melanosis, a form of dermatitis thought to be caused by excessive sun exposure.
  • Poikiloderma of Civatte, a skin condition turning the back of the neck a reddish brown color.
  • Solar lentigines, commonly known as liver spots.

What Causes Age Spots:

The color of an individual's skin is partially determined by the biosynthesis of melanin (skin pigment). This process is called melanogenesis. Tyrosinase is one of the key enzymes in the synthesising of melanin. Excessive UV light exposure (tanning beds included), aging, and genetics can lead to abnormal tyrosinase production. When this occurs, abnormal melanin is produced depositing on the skin causing hyperpigmentation.

Age spots can develop anywhere, but they are mostly likely to appear on parts of the body that receive the most UV exposure, including:

  • Face
  • Back of neck
  • Back of hands
  • Shoulders
  • Arms
  • Back

Different things that can affect age spots:

  • Estrogens
  • Tetracyclines
  • Amiodarone
  • Phenytoin
  • Phenothiazines
  • Sulfonamides

Am I at risk?

Anyone is at risk of developing age spots. However, age spots are more common in people with certain risk factors. These include:

  • 40 years of age and older
  • Fair complexion
  • Excessive sun exposure
  • Excessive tanning bed use

How to diminish them:

Although age spots usually don't pose as a health risk, individuals choose to address them for cosmetic purposes. Age spots can be diminished through prescribed medication, medical procedures, and at-home creams.

Creams and medications can gradually diminishe the appearance of age spots, but they contain harsh chemicals making your skin very sensitive to UV light. This could make your age spots worse! A holistic approach is using the canoe plant called noni fruit.

Noni fruit and dark spots:

In Japan, researchers at the Faculty of Pharmacy at Kinki University in Osaka studied the effects of Morinda Citrifolia (noni) extract and its constituents, The Doctors Prescription for Healthy Living Magazine reported the study showed noni fruit “exhibited marked inhibitory effects with 34 to 49 percent reduction of melanin content” and “no or almost no toxicity to the cells.” In the July 2009 issue of the Journal of Natural Medicines, a 50 percent ethanolic extract (MCSext) from seeds of Morinda citrifolia showed potent in vitro inhibition of tyrosinase and elastase (an enzyme that breaks down skin collagen). Further research revealed ursolic acid had tremendous elastase inhibitory activity. Noni is a rich source of ursolic acid. Several other compounds found in noni, including 3,3’-bisdemethylpinoresinol, americanin A and quercetin, were discovered to have both tyrosinase inhibitory and free radical scavenging activities, helping to reduce both hyperpigmentation and sunburn-related inflammation.

Researchers from Coreana Skin Science Research Center in Cheonan, Republic of Korea, noted that they found that Morinda Citrifolia fruit extract up-regulated biosynthesis of type I collagen and glycosaminoglycans. This means that noni has a rejuvenating, beneficial effect on cells’ ability to produce basic building blocks of healthy skin. Researchers discovered a plant chemical belonging to the anthraquinone family was responsible for this effect. “It was revealed that anthraquinone showed significantly increased elaboration of procollagen type I C-terminal peptide and glycosaminoglycans and reduced expression of the collagenase matrix metalloproteinase 1 dose-dependently in human dermal fibroblasts.”

In other words, noni fruit promotes rebuilding skin tissue while simultaneously diminishing brown spots and freckles.

"My skin looks 20 years younger!"

"Hi, I live in Hawaii and I first found out about your noni lavender lotion at the Made in Hawaii festival in Honolulu. I've been using it for about eight years now, and I'm 78, and my skin looks like I'm about 58. It's smooth and clear, and all those liver and age spots are all gone. My skin use to tear easily and bruise, but now it's real soft and pliable, I really like it. And using the fruit leather and Icyheat lotion, I was able to get rid of my arthritic pain in my elbow. So, I'm really grateful for your products.

Thanks a lot and mahalo."
