What is Stress?
A body’s reaction to a challenge or demand. Stress can be a feeling of emotional or physical tension and can arise from an event or thought that makes you feel frustrated, angry, or nervous.
Uncontrolled stress over a long period of time is considered chronic stress.
Chronic stress can cause the following health conditions:
- Adrenal fatigue
- High blood pressure
- Skin problems
- Sleep disorders
- Eating disorders
Why chronic stress causes health conditions
The hippocampus signals the cardiovascular, immune, and digestive systems to react when we are faced with a stressful situation. One hormone the body releases is cortisol (“flight-or-fight” response). When cortisol floods the body over and over again on a regular basis, it causes wear and tear on the body and speeds up the aging process.
Simple ways to stress less:
Laugh With Your Friends
During laughter, the body produces endorphins (aka happiness hormone), dopamine, and serotonin. These are neurotransmitters that are in charge of motivation and mood. Need a good laugh? Click here!
Develop a Positive Self-Talk Habit
Positive self-talk revolves recognizing the truth in situations and in yourself. A fundamental truth is that we all make mistakes. When negative events or mistakes happen, positive self-talk can often allow you to discover the optimism, hope, and joy in any given situation, big or small. Change your inner voice here
Exercise is one of the most effective ways to combat stress. Exercise lowers your body's stress hormone cortisol and releases healthy endorphins that can improve your mood naturally. Find easy ideas to get more active here
Studies show that aromatherapy can decrease anxiety by stimulating the limbic system to release chemicals that take effect in the brain promoting relaxation.
Here are some of the most calming scents:
- Ylang ylang
- Orange blossom
Spend Time with Your Pet
Having a pet may reduce stress in your life by the increase of oxytocin, (a brain chemical that promotes a positive mood). Having a pet may also help relieve stress by giving you purpose and keeping you active.
MRI scans have shown a complete change in the brain during meditation. During meditation, beta waves (state where information is being processed) decreases, and is replaced by alpha waves (associated with brain coherence). In addition, the frontal and parietal lobes (reasoning, planning, and processing sensory information part of the brain), slow down causing a relaxation response in the body. A steady supply of nutrients feeds the cells of the body and can help your brain handle stress more effectively.
Some of the best foods for natural stress relief include:
- Vitamin B complex the body uses to convert nutrients to energy. Dark leafy greens fall into this category.
- Calcium and magnesium also called “the relaxing minerals” that work together to help relax muscles. Broccoli, nuts and avocados can help you achieve your daily recommended intake.
- Omega-3 fatty acids can reduce inflammation and help stabilize your mood. Coconut oil and walnuts both contain healthy fatty acids.
- Noni fruit can aid in increasing GABA levels thus reducing stress. The best way to receive these anti-stress properties is to consume the fruit raw, like Noni Fruit Leather.
The whole raw noni fruit is a very potent superfood. Packed with over 165 beneficial compounds, including vitamins, minerals, flavonoids and 17 out of 20 essential amino acids. Raw noni pulp also contains all nine essential amino acids making it a complete protein.
Noni fruit has a very short shelf life. Just 6 to 8 hours after ripening the fruit begins to naturally rot and ferment, which destroys the potency of the raw pulp. Therefore, unless you live in the tropics it is impossible to get the raw fruit that has not fermented. That is why at Hawaiian Organic Noni on our certified organic family farm we developed a unique low heat dehydration process using non-fermented organic noni that we grow, pick and process for maximum potency. The potency is in the pulp of the fruit. Our Noni Fruit Leather is as close to the raw fruit as one can find and has a 2 year shelf life not refrigerated.
