Noni Fruit, Natural Sunburn Treatment, and You

Morinda citrifolia, also known as Noni fruit, is a powerful food for healing. But recently, Noni fruit has come under fire for the high levels of potassium it contains, which can be dangerous to some people. I want to address what small risk there is, clear up some misconceptions, and ensure you that for most people, Noni fruit is beneficial in part because of its potassium levels.

One of the many beneficial compounds in raw Noni fruit is potassium. Potassium is very important for the body, and the Institute of Medicine recommends that adults get 4.7 grams of potassium a day. If your body processes potassium normally, you’d have to eat a LOT of Noni Fruit Leather to even reach the recommended daily value, much less exceed it!

To learn more about potassium and Noni Fruit Leather:

Another summer is in full swing, which means longer and warmer days. Here on our organic family farm, the longer days give us the opportunity to get more mulching, pruning, picking and mowing done. As anyone who grew up on a farm knows, there is always something else to be done to help the trees grow and produce more potent Noni fruit. As we always say on the farm tours, “Happy healthy trees make happy, healthy, more potent Noni fruit”. Spending lots of time outside in nature is one of the best parts of summer. But in the warmer, longer days, be careful to protect the largest organ of your body – the skin.

Good thing Hawaiian Organic Noni is here to help! In this month’s newsletter, we’ll share how to use noni lotion to heal and protect your skin from sun damage. The results? Healthy, youthful skin, for many years to come.

Treating Sunburn and Preventing Sun Damage

What is a Sunburn?

Being exposed to sunlight is good and bad for the body. Exposure to UV light from the sun helps the body make its own Vitamin D, but it also damages the DNA of skin cells, resulting in sunburn. Sunburn can occur in less than 15 minutes of sun exposure and appear 2-6 hours after exposure to the sun, with the worst pain during the 6-48 hours after the burn. Peeling, itching, and lesser degrees of pain can last for several weeks.

What are the Long-Term Effects of Sun Damage?

The long-term effects of sun damage can be much more severe than a few days of pain. Because the sun damages the DNA of your cells, it can put you at higher risk for three types of skin cancer:
-Basal-cell carcinoma
-Squamous-cell carcinoma

The risk of developing melanoma increases the more times you get sunburned. If you get sunburned 5 times in your life, your risk of melanoma doubles, and continues to rise with each burn. Frequent sun damage can also cause your skin to age prematurely, resulting in leathery, wrinkly, and permanently discolored skin.

What to Do If You Get a Burn

Water-based lotions, like our Lavender Noni Lotion, expedite the healing. They hydrate the skin without trapping heat. Noni Lotions also help relieve the pain of the sunburn and reduce the long-term sun damage.

In Lavender Noni Lotion:
Scopoletin: Pain relief, anti-inflammatory
Vitamin C: Erases age spots, prevents future sun damage
Antioxidants: Reduce breakdown of collagen and fats in skin, free radicals
Collagen: Reduce wrinkles

In IcyHeat Noni Lotion:
All the same benefits of Lavender Noni Lotion
Plus cooling from added camphor oil and menthol crystals
Here’s another tip: if you “missed a spot” with sunscreen and have one small area that’s burned pretty badly, try putting Noni BioBandage on it! The formula stays on your skin, to deliver pain relief and healing more intensely for a longer period of time.

Next month we will talk about treating poison oak, ivy, and sumac with Noni Lotion.

Have fun and stay safe!

About the Author: Steve Frailey

My wife and I (Steve Frailey) moved to Kauai, Hawaii in 1982 from our organic farm in California. There were no roads, electricity, water or buildings but lots of Noni trees (Morinda Citrifolia) in our valley. We also developed a deep relationship with Noni that was growing all through our valley.  Today we run our Hawaiian Organic Noni farm, and share the gift of health with people throughout the world.
