Low energy can be extremely frustrating. Does it ever seem like no matter how much sleep you get, you never quite feel like yourself?

Energy levels tend to work as a feedback loop. That means, if you feel energized, you have a tendency to do more things that energize you! Unfortunately, the reverse is true. If your energy levels are low, the natural reaction is to rest and take it easy — which lowers your energy levels even further.

Sometimes, all you need is an energy boost to switch from a low energy feedback loop to sustainable, natural, high energy. Here are our favorite natural energy boosters to get you going!

1. Exercise

Exercise is, paradoxically, the ultimate energy booster. Many people hold off on exercising when they’re tired, because they think it will wear them out.

The truth is, in most cases (unless you’re sick!) a good workout will leave you feeling refreshed, ready to focus, and full of energy.

When your energy levels are low, it’s often best to start slow, with stretching, a walk, or yoga. It’s easier to get over that first hurdle and get started. Building a daily walk into your routine can have a huge impact on your energy levels!

Once you’ve built lower impact exercise into your routine, you can add a few more intense cardio sessions per week. Again, you don’t need to exercise to the point of collapse! Exercise at a level that is strenuous and challenging, but sustainable.

2. Sunshine in the Morning

Our bodies energy levels are controlled by chemicals our body releases at certain times of day. It uses cues from the outside world to decide when we need to feel awake, and when it’s time to start relaxing and slowing down for sleep.

The problem is, many of us give our bodies confusing signals: Bright lights and stimulation from television before bed. Days where we only see the sun on the way to and from our cars.

These mixed messages can cause us to feel tired during the day, and alert at night.

Fortunately, it’s pretty easy to give your body a hand. Get outside for some sunshine and fresh air at some point every morning, before 11:00. About 15-30 minutes is plenty of time to get a refreshing walk in, while soaking up those bright rays that tell your body it’s morning.

3. Glass of Lemon Water

Tons of people swear by a glass of lemon water first thing in the morning, and there is lots of evidence to suggest they might be onto something!

First of all, a glass of water is just the thing for bringing your body out of its sleep-fasting. Water re-hydrates your body, so your brain can get to work. Drinking water is generally a good way to beat fatigue. Fatigue is one of the first symptoms of dehydration, often occurring before you even feel thirsty!

4. Iron-Rich Foods

Chronic fatigue can be a sign of anemia (low red blood cell count), often due to iron deficiency. When your body doesn’t have enough red blood cells to carry oxygen throughout the body, you naturally feel tired, weak, or even light-headed. Women are particularly susceptible to iron-deficiency anemia.

This is usually correctable by eating iron-rich foods, especially iron-rich plants like:

  • Lentils
  • Beans
  • Leafy Greens
  • Pumpkin Seeds
  • Dried apricots
  • Broccoli
  • Wheat Germ
  • Nuts

If you have a more extreme deficiency, you may need to take a supplement.

5. Green Tea

Green tea is a wonderful way to get a small amount of caffeine, alongside other health benefits. The amount of caffeine in green tea is much less than the amount in coffee or even black tea. It’s just enough to make you feel alert, but not jittery, even if you’re quite sensitive to caffeine.
