Noni, scientifically known as Morinda Citrifolia belongs to the coffee family Rubiaceae and can be found growing around the world in the tropical regions. The tree grows from sea level to two thousand foot elevations. It will grow from wet lush rainforests to almost desert like volcanic terrains. The tree can grow up to 40 feet tall and has large veined leaves that are dark green and glossy. The tree produces a fruit that is oval in shape and when mature can measure from 3-7 inches.
Noni seeds have an extremely long germination process, taking anywhere from 2-8 months. Seedlings finally sprout and the tree begins its development to a mature tree which can take up to 18 months. Noni fruit first begins as a small green fruit and then small white flowers come out of the fruit. The flowers have nothing to do with pollination, a very unique trait of the Noni tree. There are only 4 plants in the entire plant kingdom that do this! The fruit grows in size turning yellow in color and eventually will turn white when ripe and fully mature. The fruit quickly begins to ripen turning translucent white and soft like a ripe tomato. It now gains it’s smelly characteristic of blue cheese…Noni fruit is also known as Cheesy Fruit or Stinky Fruit!
