Where does my food come from series: Conventional vs Organic Farming

Being a certified organic noni farm, we post numerous blogs on the subjects of organic and sustainable farming. But what are the differences between organic and conventional farming?

Did you know? The U.S. Department of Agriculture certifies organic products according to strict guidelines. Organic farmers (like us!) must apply for certification, pass a detailed annual inspection and pay a fee to get and remain certified organic.

  1. Conventional farming uses chemical fertilizers to promote plant growth, while organic farming employs manure and compost to fertilize the soil. The use of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, irradiation, sewage sludge, hormones, antibiotics and genetic engineering is strictly prohibited.

  1. GMOs – Genetically modified crops are not allowed in organic farming. GMOs can be grown in conventional fields. GMO or Genetically Engineered (GE) Foods are foods whose DNA has been altered in ways that cannot occur in nature or in traditional cross breeding. Research has not confirmed the safety of GMO food in your body or the possible long-term negative side effects. Remember when round-up herbicide was advertised as safe and now research has shown the cancer causing side effects. 

Conventional farming sprays pesticides to get rid of pests, while organic farmers turn to insects and birds, mating disruption, or traps.

Did you know? A 2014 study found that conventionally grown produce was four times more likely to have pesticide residue than organically grown produce.

  1. Conventional farming uses chemical herbicides to manage weeds, while organic farming rotates crops, hand weeds, or uses mulches. Organic farmers rely on developing biological diversity in the field to disrupt habitat for pest organisms, and to maintain soil fertility. 

Did you know? Approximately 940 million pounds of pesticides are applied annually with only 10% of that reaching the desired target. 

  1. Conventional farming uses chemical fertilizers to meet plant demands but in the long term this depletes the natural health of the soil. Plus conventional farmers consume a substantial amount of land and non-renewable resources. Sustainable crops are more permanent than conventional crops because they work in harmony with the landscape rather than drain it of nutrients and biomass. 

Did you know? In a seven-year experiment in Italy, Marinari compared two adjacent farms, one organic and one conventional. It was found that fields grown on the organic farm displayed significantly better soil nutritional and microbiological conditions compared to the conventional farm.  

Know the Difference!

Products that are “100 percent organic” are labeled as such and given a small USDA seal. Products that are labeled “organic” contain at least 95–99% organic ingredients (by weight). The remaining ingredients are not available organically but have been approved by the NOP. These products may also display the USDA seal. Some product labels may also state that the product was “made with organic ingredients,” which means the product contains at least 70 percent organic ingredients. These products will not bear the USDA seal; instead, they may list up to three ingredients on the front of the packaging.

On our 70 acre certified organic family noni farm we mulch heavily, make our own compost, grow earthworms for worm castings and make compost teas to foliar spray and feed our orchards. We work with nature to build healthy living soil to feed our very healthy fruit trees that produce an abundance of noni fruit

My wife and I (Steve Frailey) moved to Kauai, Hawaii in 1982 from our organic farm in California. There were no roads, electricity, water or buildings but lots of Noni trees (Morinda Citrifolia) in our valley. We also developed a deep relationship with Noni that was growing all through our valley.  Today we run our Hawaiian Organic Noni farm, and share the gift of health with people throughout the world.
